Why Organisations Protect Complexity
The argument
Complexity can be protected, not merely inherited.
Organisational complexity is not always an accidental by-product of growth.
The article examines why complexity can persist because it serves interests, preserves authority, protects roles, obscures accountability or allows existing operating arrangements to survive. Simplification therefore becomes a governance and incentive problem, not merely a process-design exercise.
