The leadership problem

Testing is often discussed as a technical workstream, then treated as somebody else's responsibility until late delivery evidence becomes uncomfortable. By that point, poor provision, missing environments, weak data, unclear acceptance criteria and unresolved dependencies have already shaped the outcome.

Project and programme managers do not need to become testers. They do need to lead the conditions in which credible testing can happen.

What the playbook helps leaders do

  • Understand testing needs early enough to influence scope, design and funding
  • Make adequate provision for people, environments, tools, data and suppliers
  • Bring in appropriate test leadership and specialist capability at the right time
  • Ask better questions and seek the right evidence through delivery
  • Recognise weak assurance signals before they become release crises
  • Make explicit, accountable decisions about residual risk

Audience

The primary audience is project and programme managers. It is also useful to sponsors, PMO leaders, product leaders, transformation directors and anyone accountable for delivery outcomes without being a testing specialist.

Publication architecture

The playbook combines a complete twenty-chapter management reference with a field toolkit. Each tool is intended to turn a management question into a usable artefact, conversation or decision record.
